Things To Do In Lyme Regis During Your Stay

Lyme Regis is a stunning Jurassic Coast town, with so much to see and do besides enjoying the glorious beach and seafront. Here are some ideas of how to occupy your time while staying with us at the Alexandra, which is conveniently located in the heart of the town:

The Cobb

The iconic harbour wall of Lyme Regis is called the Cobb. In bad weather, Meryl Streep managed to get to the end of the Cobb in the film ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ however, in Jane Austen’s ‘Persuasion’, Louisa Musgrove jumps off the steps, falls and is concussed, so mind how you go! The end of the Victoria Pier offers classic views of Lyme Regis, with a panoramic view of Charmouth, past Stonebarrow and Golden Cap to West Bay and beyond to Chesil Beach.

Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium

This traditional, family run attraction prides itself on offering visitors a fun and interactive insight into the sea creatures which inhabit our local waters. Situated at the end of the Cobb, their mission is to spark your imagination, arouse curiosity and give you an appreciation of the amazing marine life which can be found along the Jurassic coast.

Dinosaurland Fossil Museum

This private museum is owned and run by palaeontologist Steve Davies and his wife Jenny. The museum contains a spectacular collection of the local Jurassic marine fossils. The collection grows each year and is now probably the best fossil collection on public display in SW England. It is a traditional museum using the beauty and majesty of more than 12,000 specimens to show people just how exciting and wonderful the world of fossils and dinosaurs really is.

Lyme Regis Museum

The museum is situated in the heart of Lyme Regis, with stunning views of Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coast. Displays showcase the amazing life story of Mary Anning and a world class fossil collection, as well as featuring the town’s colourful history and its remarkable literary connections, from Jane Austen and John Fowles to Tracey Chevalier. A busy programme of Fossil Walks, Gallery Talks and Children’s Activities runs throughout the year.

The Town Mill

This ancient watermill, set in the artisan quarter of Lyme Regis, was rescued from dereliction by local volunteers, through a ten-year restoration project. Today, the story of The Town Mill is recounted by volunteer millers and history guides, who mill stoneground wholemeal flour every day and keep this special place open for everyone to enjoy.

The Marine Theatre

The Marine Theatre is right on the seafront in beautiful Lyme Regis. The location – with wide views of the sea and Lyme bay – is very important to the Marine’s identity, which makes it appealing to both the public and performers. While it’s called a theatre, the offering is much broader: there’s a vibrant programme of entertainment including bands, films, comedians, plays and community-led events.

Lyme Sculpture Trail

The Lyme Regis Sculpture Trail is located across the Langmoor and Lister gardens in the heart of Lyme. Perched above the beach, with far-reaching views to the famous Cobb and coastline beyond, these public gardens provide a perfect outdoor gallery amongst the woodland, lawns and flower boarders.

Lyme History Walks

Lyme History Walks start from the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis at 11.00am and last one and a half hours (see schedule to plan you day). Hear stories of buccaneers, smugglers and the Discovery of Bermuda. Trek through narrow streets where a garrison of 800 men & women withstood an 8 week siege by a Royalist army during the Civil War. See where the Duke of Monmouth landed and stayed during his ill-fated attempt to seize the throne from his uncle James II and learn how Lyme rose to vast wealth and influence, as a major Elizabethan port, declined dramatically for a hundred years, then reinvented itself as a fashionable Georgian tourist destination.

Lyme Bay Rib Charter

LBRC offers a wide and varied choice of options and are happy to tailor a specific activity to meet your personal requirement. Based in the centre of Lyme Bay, Dorset, which affords excellent and immediate access to the beautiful Jurassic Coast.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Stand Up Paddle Boarding is one of the booming watersports in the UK. Boylo’s has BSUPA trained instructors who are competent, friendly and keen to take you on a paddle board lesson in Lyme Regis. Their store is right on the seafront at the beach. Whether you are a beginner paddle boarder or more advanced, they offer SUP lessons to suit all capabilities with one to one tuition or group paddle board lessons available.
